Puerta en una casa de campo.

Se trata de una puerta en una casa tradicional, perteneciente a esta mas breve tradición arquitectónica en América del Sur. Este concreto espacio se encuentra ubicado en una casa en el campo, pero lo estaba igualmente en las casas en torno a patios de la ciudad que existió hasta hasta comienzos del siglo XX en Chile. Éste es un espacio distinto al actual, tratemos de dar con la experiencia del croquis con su diferencia.

Estamos en un espacio vasto, es amplio, sin ser una proeza constructiva; son luces que puede cubrir una pieza de madera. Los muros de adobe con un espesor igual al de la hoja de la puerta. El vano lo cubren dos hojas, una para el uso habitual, dos hojas abiertas para entrar muebles o en una ocasión especial. Es puerta y ventana a la vez, incluye la seguridad con una reja exterior, por dentro unas persianas permiten oscurecer el interior. La puerta proporcionalmente es una pequeña abertura en un cubo mayor, ella es una parte armónica en un orden arquitectónico que se caracteriza porque sus partes se encuentran vinculadas por una extensión construida que permanece al aire libre; un modo de nombrar este orden es el de un claustro.

Ahora lo distinto al espacio que habitamos hoy es el distanciamiento que construye el claustro. La experiencia de habitar este espacio trae un distinto sentido del tiempo. Sin ser una demora innecesaria, este espesor que hay que atravesar que le otorga un instante al abrir y cerrar la puerta nos deja en un tiempo con tamaño de claustro.

El espacio habitable de hoy que viene con el dominio de todo cuanto toca, las técnicas constructivas, el clima, las distancias, le imprime al espacio habitable una característica que proviene del dominio y esta es que lo vuelve inmediato. Así el paso de una puerta hoy es directo y en su inmediatez se anticipa a su paso siendo un cristal.

The door belonging to the order of the cloister makes us see the immediacy of contemporary space.

 

A door in a rural house.

It is a door in a traditional house, belonging to that briefest architectonic tradition in South America. This particular space is located in a rural house, but they were found equally in the patio -centred houses of the city that existed at the beginning of the 20^th century in Chile. This is a space different to that of today, with the experience the sketch gives us, let us try to frame this difference.

We stand in a vast space, it is ample, no small constructive feat; there are apertures that a piece of wood can cover. The walls of adobe have a thickness equal to the width of the door-leaf. Two doors occupy the opening, one is in daily use, two are opened for the entry of furniture or on a special occasion.  It is a door and a window at the same time, it acknowledges security with a metal grill on the outside, blinds allow shading of the interior within. Proportionally the door is a small opening in a larger cube, it is a harmonic element of an architectonic order characterized by the fact that its elements are linked by a constructed expanse that remains in the open air; one way of naming this order is that of the cloister.

Now what is different to the space we occupy today is the distance that the cloister constructs. The experience of living this space carries a distinct sense of time. Without being unduly delayed, this thickness to be traversed that gives a moment to the opening and closing of the door leaves us in a time with the size of the cloister.

The living space of today that comes with the mastery of everything it touches, constructive technics, climate, distances, gives living space a feature that comes from this mastery, it is made immediate. Thus the passage of a door today is direct and in its immediacy its path is anticipated to be crystal clear.
