La feria dos veces a la semana en la ciudad.

Tanto en Valparaíso como en Viña del Mar, la feria se realiza en el lecho del principal cauce de agua que atraviesa la ciudad.

En Valparaíso en la Avenida Argentina, que hoy es un cauce cubierto por el pavimento, pero bajo él circula el agua que llega hasta el mar. Y en Viña del Mar la feria se instala en el lecho mismo del Estero de Marga Marga.

Podríamos pensar que se trata de una casualidad, pero esta insistencia puede indicarnos algo.

La primera realidad que se nos hace presente es que se trata de un cauce principal, es decir, es un curso de agua de cierta importancia, no se lo puede eludir. En la mayor parte del año el curso de agua cubre un quinto del lecho, en los días de lluvia puede llegar a cubrir su totalidad abarcando todo su ancho con una gran masa de agua que se dirige a gran velocidad hacia el mar.

Estamos ante una extensión de la ciudad con tamaño, pero en la cual no es posible residir o permanecer ya que el agua la cubrirá completamente. Ella debe permanecer como pura extensión, es donde se hace presente el manto natural sobre el cual se emplaza la ciudad.

En este recinto que es a la vez céntrico y marginal donde se le da cabida a la feria, ella es un campamento de un día. Cada proveedor se instala con sus cajones construyendo una suerte de mesas donde exhibe los productos de la tierra. Lo que allí se expone son unos bellos frutos, quizá los mejores, con sus pieles de vegetales coloridas, algunas brillantes. Cada ejemplar es una singularidad para ser llevado a las mesas de los ciudadanos. Son ejemplares bellos y efímeros su frescura es breve, y se los ofrece de viva voz como una óptima ocasión donde coinciden precio y calidad. Se trata del presente de la vida de la ciudad en su modo de ser efímero, ya que ella también tiene un presente que quiere permanecer para siempre.

Ahora estamos ante este presente, colorido, ruidoso, que nutre a la ciudad y que apenas permanece unas horas, como una celebración en esta extensión que libera el curso del agua.

A street-market in the channel that releases the water is the celebration of the ephemeral urban present.

The twice-weekly street-market in the city.

In both Valparaíso and Viña del Mar the street-market takes place in the bed of the principal channel of water that crosses the city.

In the Avenida Argentina in Valparaíso is a channel covered by paving today, but below this runs the water that flows towards the sea. And in Viña del Mar the street-market is installed in the very bed of the Marga Marga estuary.

We might think this a coincidence, but the insistence can tell us something.

The primary reality we are presented with is a principal channel, that is to say, a course of water of some importance that cannot be avoided. In the greater part of the year the water course covers a fifth of the bed, in rainy days it can cover all of it, encompassing its width with a great mass of water that heads towards the sea at great speed.

We stand before a sizeable extent of the city, one on which it is not possible to reside or remain when it is completely covered by water. It  must remain pure extent, where the natural mantle on which  the city is located is made present.

In this enclosure where the street-market is accommodated, that is both central and marginal, there is a day-long encampment. Each vendor is installed with his or her crates constructing a sort of table where the produce is displayed.  What is displayed is beautiful fruit, perhaps the best, with colourful vegetable skins, some of them shiny.  Each specimen is a singular item to be taken to the tables of the citizens. They are beautiful and ephemeral specimens, their freshness is brief, and in loud voices they are offered as an excellent opportunity where price and quality are matched. This is the present of city life in its ephemeral mode, but it also holds a present that seeks to remain forever.

Now we stand before this colourful noisy present that nurtures the city and like a celebration, remains scarcely a few hours, on this extent that releases the course of the water.
