Frente a la Casa Central de la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.

Estamos aquí en en el término de la Avenida Brasil, un terreno probablemente ganado al mar. La pista derecha de esta avenida tiene poco tráfico, su bandejón central es una suerte de descuidado jardín que va entre las dos pistas en todo su largo. Las palmeras que se encuentran en ella en esta parte, cuentan con una jardinera que encierra una pequeña superficie de pasto, el resto del suelo es tierra apisonada por el paso de los peatones.

La Universidad es el lugar donde la ciudad se ha detenido para estudiar. Circulan por las veredas adyacentes estudiantes, profesores, y en este alrededor está la presencia de los automóviles estacionados, un taxi con sus puertas abiertas cuyo chofer le hace aseo. En la jardinera sobre el pasto duerme un vagamundo.

Ahora en este mínimo umbral entre la Universidad y la ciudad podemos decir que se encuentra el inicio de un ofrecimiento mútuo, la ciudad retira el tráfico pesado y la Universidad aporta una presencia distendida, se podría decir hasta de una mayor tolerancia. A los que estudian les podemos suponer en su detención una mirada doble; ya que su concernimiento los centra en unos propósitos que son primeramente intelectuales, a la vez que miran la proximidad por donde caminan al cruzar esta calle con poco tránsito.

Situación muy distinta para quienes actúan en el mercado que se encuentra en la cuadra siguiente, donde lo inmediato absorbe toda la atención del presente. Tal espacio de atención no tolera ninguna holgura como un vagamundo durmiendo en medio de ellos.

Este ámbito del del estudio con su holgura podríamos nombrarlo como el espacio de la cavilación.

La baja densidad de la ciudad de Valparaíso hace que su extensión no sea valorada como tal y en medio de su centro urbano como en esta avenida el suelo esté abandonado sin forma como tierra apisonada.

La ciudad espera que estos dos ofrecimientos la holgura vial y la distención universitaria lleguen a constituir un lugar, y así acceder a la conciencia de ella misma que es su plenitud.

The space of study with its generosity an offering to the plenitude of the city

Opposite the Casa Central of the Catholic University of Valparaíso.

We stand here at the end of Avenida Brasil, an area of land probably taken from the sea. The right lane of the avenue has little traffic, its central island is a sort of unkempt garden that runs between the two lanes of the avenue throughout its length.  The palm trees found in this area stand within a container that encircles a small surface of grass, the rest of the ground is earth made smooth by the passage of pedestrians.

The University is the place where the city stops in order to study.

Students, professors, circulate on the pavements nearby, and in this milieu stationary cars are present, a taxi with its doors open whose driver is cleaning himself up. A vagabond sleeps on the earth in the container.

Now in this minimal threshold between the University and the city we can say there is the beginning of a mutual offering, the city removes its heavy traffic and the University provides a relaxed presence, and even, it might be said a greater tolerance. In their stopping we can assume an ambiguous look in those who study, due to their focus on purposes that are primarily intellectual, while at the same time paying attention to where they are walking across this street with little traffic.

A situation very different to those who act in the market found in the following block, where what is immediate absorbs all their attention. Such an attention span does not tolerate any generosity like a vagabond sleeping in their midst.

With its generosity, we can name this scope of study the space of reverie.

The low density of the city of Valparaíso means that its land is not valued and thus in the middle of its city centre, as in this avenue, the ground is left without form as flattened earth.

The city hopes that these two offerings, wayside generosity and the relaxation of the university come to constitute a place, and thus bring to consciousness what is its very plenitude.
