Estamos aquí en una pasarela que conecta dos cerros sobre la quebrada, un lugar de tránsito público.

Reparamos que es una construcción mínima, de madera, correctamente trazada y construida, pero un útil de duración muy limitada. No es una construcción que reuna lo fijo con lo permanente que es el horizonte urbano habitual.

Este hecho constructivo nos hace aparecer la ciudad hoy. La ciudad es el lugar de las verdaderas magnitudes, que no deben ni agrandarse ni achicarse para dar cabida. Y al mismo tiempo este ser en verdadera magnitud es a lo largo y a lo ancho, que trae una virtud espacial, multiplicar las posibilidades para ir. Se puede ir de un lugar a otro siguiendo varios caminos equivalentes, no hay un solo derrotero.Valparaíso con sus cerros ha de habérselas con esto, lucha por conseguirlo, porque la topografía no se lo otorga.

Esta pasarela es una construcción efímera pero eficiente, con ella la ciudad cumple su ser ciudad, al multiplicar las posibilidades para habitar y lo que es capital lo hace en las verdaderas magnitudes, con un recorrido ni mas largo ni mas corto.

Este hecho muestra el presente. Es presente lo que canta el destino, que se cumple en lo favorable o en lo adverso. Valparaíso hoy con lo efímero construye la verdadera magnitud en su voluntad de ser ciudad ahora y aquí.

Being a city: the ephemeral and the present

We are standing on a walkway that connects two hills above a ravine, a place of public passage.

We notice that it is a minimal construction of wood, correctly set out and constructed, but with a limited life. It is not a construction that reunites the fixed with the permanent that is the usual urban horizon.

This fact of construction reveals today’s city to us. The city is the place of true magnitudes, that should neither enlarge nor shrink to accommodate (passage). And while this being in true magnitude is to do with length and breadth, it carries a spatial virtue of multiplying the possibilities for getting about. One can go from place to place following several equivalent paths, there is no single route-map. Valparaíso with its hills has to deal with this and fight to get it, because the topography does not grant it.

This walkway is an ephemeral but effective construction, with it the city celebrates its fundamental role: maximizing opportunities of living and what makes capital in true magnitudes, a journey neither longer nor shorter (than necessary).

This fact demonstrates the present. What sings destiny, what is fulfilled in the favorable and its opposite, is present. Today’s Valparaíso constructs true magnitude with the ephemeral in its will to be a city here and now.
