Rambla en Barcelona.

Se trata de una calle singular, por su trazado en otra época habría pasado un curso de agua hacia el mar.

Lo que hoy llama la atención es su calidad espacial. Con su mayor ancho se le ha construido una plataforma central, dejando sólo una vía de tránsito para vehículos en cada uno de sus costados. No elimina del todo el flujo vehicular, pero lo disminuye dejando de ser una pista. En cuanto a la trama urbana ésta interrumpe la rambla con sus pistas atravesándola en todo su largo y regulando su paso con semáforos.

Así podemos constatar que esta singular avenida con esta superficie disponible en su centro es un lugar de encuentro en la ciudad, su calidad le proviene de sus ofrecimientos: comercio en sus costados, al mismo tiempo que es un paseo en su plataforma central permitiendo múltiples marchas de peatones, ciclistas, niños con sus juegos, y la posibilidad de permanecer en las mesas que son atendidas por los cafés circundantes.

Este espacio así valorado está construido con las fachadas de los edificios que se levantan en sus dos costados, cuyas entradas y segundos niveles ofrecen a la vista unos volúmenes constituidos con una alta dedicación. A nivel de la calle algunas superficies están tratadas con bajo relieves, más arriba en los pisos principales las ventanas forman unas tribunas hacia la calle acabadas también con una singular dedicación.

Esta amplitud, junto a estos límites que forman las fachadas construyendo una iluminación habitable al aire libre, sin excluir la presencia atenuadora del follaje de los árboles, nos hablan de aquello que es residir. En esta parte de la ciudad ella se dice a sí misma lo que es el acto de residir, donde lo necesario se cumple, como las velocidades de los desplazamiento. Se le da forma a la verdadera magnitud suprimiendo el ruido, logrando no el silencio sino el murmullo de la multitud, que conserva la escala humana donde aún entre muchos de oye cada voz. Residir es donde un espacio templado y cuidado en sus límites da cabida al valor de los pasos, así la ciudad que es multitud se hace presente en los pasos de cada cual. Este desplazarse que vale en sí mismo es el paseo.

The tempered space that leads to the city itself: the walk that is residing.

This is a unique street, in another era its layout would have been a water-course to the sea.

What draws attention today is its spatial quality.  As a result of its greater width a central platform has been constructed, leaving just a passage for vehicles on both sides. This does not eliminate all the vehicular flow, but diminishes the street’s status as a route. As regards the urban grid, this interrupts the avenue via routes that cross over it along its length, regulating its passage with traffic-lights.

Thus we can confirm that this unique avenue with an occupiable surface at its centre is a meeting place of the city, its quality providing its offerings: commerce to each side, at the same time that its central platform makes it a walk permitting the multiple strolls of pedestrians, cyclists and children with their games, alongside the possibility of staying at tables supplied by the surrounding cafés.

This valued space was constructed with building facades that rise on both sides, whose entrances and second levels offer volumes whose appearance has been given a high level of attention.  At the level of the street surfaces are treated with low relief, higher up on the principal floors the windows form tribunes towards the street that are also finished with a singular dedication.

Constructing a habitable illumination in the open air without precluding the softening presence of tree foliage, this amplitude, along with the limits provided by the facades, tell us something about what it is to reside. This part of the city, where a need like the speeds of movement is met, speaks to itself about the act of residing.  It gives form to the proper size for suppressing noise, leaving not silence but the murmur of the crowd that conserves human scale, where even amongst the many each voice is heard. To reside becomes possible where a tempered space whose edges are given care accommodates the value of each step, and the city that is the multitude makes itself present in each one’s steps. This movement, valuable for itself, is the walk.

 

Paseo is not an easy word to translate into English. A paseo is a walk or a stroll, but also the word for the public excursion into the neighbourhood to greet one’s fellow citizens that takes place on a daily basis in the afternoon or early evening in Spain.  A paseo is also a name for a kind of street, like the English ‘walk’ or ‘parade’, i.e. potentially a locus in the city. As a translation, ‘stroll’ gives more of a sense of the casual unpredictable character of such an activity whereas ‘walk’ unpacks two of the multiple meanings of ‘paseo’, i.e. a potential urban location as well as a typical pattern of movement.  English tourist accounts concerning Barcelona often speak of people parading up and down Las Ramblas, indicating that this street is somewhere ‘to see and be seen’. ‘Parading’ outside deserves comment because it is not something typical of England or the English – except possibly when they are on vacation in places like Bath or Brighton – probably because the English climate does not induce a thirst for the cool of the evening in the same way, even in summer.
