English version by Mary Ann Steane.
The dream, a retreat veiled in its fragility, sustains the double rhythm of urban life.
Sleeping.
We notice in this inescapable fact of our human condition what concerns us: habitable space.
The sleeper’s body lies in the bed; it is not stretched over it, another possibility, but lies mingled with it.
The dream may have much significance and inner connotations, but for those who construct habitable space it is the external possibility of the inner act that is a concerns. Thus the result of a nightmare or a happy dream is beyond our profession.
What we cannot escape is the fact of the body that lies in total abandon supported by the bed. In this position the body apportions its weight over the greatest surface of contact. Gravity acts on it to maintain it in a stable equilibrium without the action of musculature that becomes completely relaxed. This is the reason why the bed is a soft support, allowing this state of abandonment to gravity.
With the supported and the supporting intermingled, in the sketch the face appears to melt into the pillow.
The dream: inescapable and yet fragile activity that must be veiled.
The dream is veiled by the space of the cosmos, by the darkness of night; by habits, that accustom the body to the workday timetable; it is also sustained by the care of those who live beneath the same roof; and by constructed space: the bedroom is a retreat at the back of the house and the very thing that guards its possibility of constituting an intimate interior, a retreat from the public life of the city.
From this point of view the space of the city is the construction of a double rhythm, that of the battle for life in common, with all its lucidity and strength, and the retreat of the dream that in its fragility must usually be veiled in its intimacy.
