Traditional order and the order of height linked by the space of landscape

Valparaíso on Avenida Brasil.

Close by are buildings with facades, with their rigorous plane that arrives at the pavement.   All these buildings reach the ground following the same line. It is the city constructed by streets with facades. Each one of which constructs its own invention, but all on the same lines.

The openings are also aligned with the others and it is a building whose storeys can be counted : two, three, four. This facade receives shadows projected by the palm trees that grow on the central  island of the avenue.

The parked cars on both sides of the street display a contemporary approach to habitability (the machine aesthetic) they cannot escape. The openings of these cars are not totally detached from the orthogonality of the windows of the buildings,  despite  the curved lines of their corners  and  their windscreens  that are inclined,  the side ones, even though called windows, have not yet attained a name like the canopy of an aircraft, perhaps because they are chained to the ground.

Further away a high building, the other way of constructing the city, definitely not with the street, rather with an indirect connection to the ground, whose height is not perceptible with a glance. The other order. In this order how to reach the third floor does not come with a glance, but by way of a number. I go to Department 78-A, I access locations by co-ordinates.

The city is lived today as this double order. There is the direct space of the street with its facades that receive the shadows of palm trees, the cars that are parked in front of the door, the windows one above the other in storeys that are countable by the eye, the house that is entered by way of a door.

The other order is indirect, there is no facade of windows, but instead a curtain wall, a crystal from top to bottom that does not receive shadows from identifiable bodies, its volume independent of the street, a place where cars are kept underground. The building does not have a door, it has access points, a door of the house not of the street. The windows cannot exist, a property of the curtain wall which makes each level a co-ordinate.  This indirect order resides in the understanding of the occupant, it is not possible to draw it, the volumes it creates are barely retained and distinguished. With this order the high density considered a good for the city is achieved.

The ground, the open expanse of the Avenida Brasil remains with its embankments of earth or sorghum, clumsy and scarcely constructed, with its gardens around the palm trees. This expanse remains the direct space of the city which belongs to everyone. Today being direct retains an ambiguity or imprecision like a garden, where it is not known nor even of interest to know if we are in front of the first palm tree or the middle one. In a direct but imprecise space, rather than one of coordinates, returning to the same point is not possible because this does not constitute a purpose.

In this way the habitable space of the city is constructed, with its precise spatial orders: the traditional building through facades, of a direct space; and the building through height of a precise indirect space of co-ordinates; with before both the direct space of the open spaces and esplanades that introduce the imprecision, ambiguity, or undercurrent of the landscape for being.
