Underneath the table, ground without expression, a primary space that accommodates distinctions.

Underneath the table.

In a work meeting, around a table, or better in a meeting with a table in the middle, with some adjacent to it, others more distant, but all equally concerned with the words that prevail here.  For certain this draw of a table does not concern the co-participation of an altar, it is a table between equal speakers and listeners.

Now what has attracted is something not very visible, what doesn’t appear or what is not usually revealed, the space below the table.

The least visible is the least prominent, the thing that accumulates the highest degree of distinctiveness is the face. Each human being in making him or herself unique and unrepeatable claims presence through the face, here is one’s present and one’s verification, identity is in the face.

Underneath the table we are at another extreme. We cannot say that shoes are equal in their conformation, there are distinctions. But neither are they able to configure a distinct expressiveness as the face does: beautiful, smiling, sad, or severe. The distinctions lend a distance, these are loafers, those over there boots, but there is no expression in this distance.

This space whose expressiveness is hardly seen makes us pay attention to the primary space that permits inhabitation: the ground.

The horizontal plane that is not obviously revealed is what is primarily in common. Unapparent and gravitational, receiving the weight of all without demur.

It is this horizontal which addresses the first act in generating habitable space, the floor is in the plans.

This space, the horizontal ground, that is the beginning of artificial space, allows inhabitation, withdraws by accommodating the architectonic space itself. Thus it seems to be that distinctiveness and identity are sustained in a ground whose virtue is to not to distinguish but to accommodate.
