Valparaíso, en la Avenida Brasil frente a la Universidad.

Los jóvenes que tienen una relación con su cuerpo de disponibilidad y energía, se aproximan al suelo con gran facilidad y hacen de un desnivel un asiento para conversar, con sus bultos detrás de ellos.

Por la avenida delante pasa el gran flujo de la locomoción colectiva de Valparaíso.

En este lugar las personas están en tres estados, los que conversan sentados y no han decidido partir aún, lo harán oportunamente después; los que están de pie al costado de los buses que se detienen brevemente y pasan uno tras otro, ellos están a punto de partir, bultos en la mano leyendo rápidamente los destinos para subirse al bus indicado. Por último están los que van dentro del bus que están en otro estado, son llevados de viaje.

La ciudad hoy cubre grandes extensiones gracias a la energía y capacidad de transporte con que cuenta. Este ser de la ciudad en su ir es un acontecer en el tiempo y en el espacio, es un presente que no se deja ver y apenas constituye una experiencia.

Caminar de un punto a otro constituye un hecho que recoge la memoria, es una experiencia, hasta puede constituirse en un paseo. Si las circunstancias lo hacen apremiante será una carrera.

Pero la movilización colectiva tiene el carácter de contratiempo. Puede estar muy determinado el lugar y la hora en que se sube al bus, y el momento y lugar de descender de él. El trayecto ‘se hace’ largo o corto, queda entregado a una apreciación, desaparece el espacio solo queda el tiempo, el espacio se vuelve un medio.

Así podemos distinguir en la ciudad dos tipos de extensión que coexisten simultáneamente, el espacio directo de la profundidad, en este lugar se da el acto de habitar esperando, los cuerpos con sus bultos deciden sus desplazamientos y permanencia. Y también están  las pistas para las velocidades mecánicas, para ser llevados con mas o menos contratiempos.

Así para habitar la plenitud de la ciudad hoy, actuando en ella, hay que someterse a los medios para salvar y dominar las distancias.

Acting in space and subject to a means of travel.

Valparaíso, in the Avenida Brasil opposite the University.

Young people lithe and energetic in body, lower themselves to the ground with great facility and make it a seat for conversing, with their rucksacks behind them.

Along the avenue in front of them passes the great flow of the collective locomotion of Valparaíso.

In this place people are in three states, there are those who converse sitting down and have decided not to leave even though they have had the opportunity to do so; there are those on foot at the side of the buses that stop briefly and leave one after the other; these people are on the point of leaving, luggage in hand, and rapidly read the destinations to get on the right bus. Finally there are those who get on the bus who are in another state – carried away on a journey.

The city today covers great expanses thanks to the energy and capacity of the transport on which it depends. This city existence in-transit is a happening in time and space, it is a present that is not revealed and scarcely constitutes an experience.

Walking from one point to another constitutes a fact that reflects memory, it is an experience that may even become a stroll. If circumstances make it imperative it may be a race.

But collective travel has the character of a setback. It can be a very specific place and time that one gets on the bus and off it. The journey ‘becomes’ long or short, and given assessment, there is only space that disappears over time, space itself becoming a means.

Thus we can distinguish in the city two kinds of extent that co-exist simultaneously, first the direct space of depth, a place dedicated to the act of  waiting, the bodies with their rucksacks deciding their movements and permanence. And then there are the routes for mechanical speeds, to be taken with more or less setbacks.

Thus to live the fullness of the city today, acting in it, one must submit to the means to save and dominate distances.
