El orden urbano quiere llegar hasta el pormenor, todo vacío habitable y habitándose, espacio sin indiferencia construido en su luminosidad.

La reja es una construcción del espacio urbano que impide el paso pero no la vista, es un filtro. Hoy llega a ser normado en la distancia entre los barrotes.

Esta reja deja ver un hecho del espacio habitable. Con los barrotes distanciados entre sí se cumple su utilidad, pero hay más, los barrotes son de dos secciones distintas y su coronamiento es una construcción cuidada.

Podemos decir que esta dedicación al término de la reja no es un exceso como un lujo innecesario que moleste. Mas bien podemos reconocer un gusto por residir que es también una dedicación.

Ahora esta residencia que construye el espacio habitable no es solo para sí, la reja está expuesta, es un bien que en su presencia se dona.

La arquitectura es un arte público porque dona su presencia, por esto su obra es la ciudad.

Residence, gift and city

A railing in Calle Merlet, on the Cordillera Hill, Valparaíso.

Urban order seeks to arrive at detailing, such that all open space is both habitable and being inhabited: space that is not indifferent constructed in luminosity.

Railings are a construction of urban space that impedes movement but not sight, they are a filter. Today this is regulated by the distance between the bars.

This railing reveals a fact of habitable space. Its usefulness is accomplished through the separated bars, but there is something else, the bars are of two distinct sections and their crowning is a careful construction.

We can say that this close consideration of the way the railings terminate is not an excess like a pointless luxury that distracts. We can recognize very well a pleasure in residing that is also a dedication.

Now this residence that constructs habitable space is not only done for itself, that the railing is displayed is a benefit its presence donates.

Architecture is a public art because it donates its presence, in this way its work is the city.
