desvelar
rasgar el velo
a través
- la voz nos dice –
travesía
que no descubrimiento o invento
consentir

1- AMEREIDA

I start here with the poem ‘Amereida’, published in 1967 in Chile. It is a collective work directed by the poet Godofredo Iommi Marini. This text seeks to be located at the highest level of poetry, in order to undertake the task of revealing the potential destiny of the South American continent. The text was conceived in the avant-garde space that the poet Stéphane Mallarmé initiated with his work A throw of the dice will never abolish chance, where the white of the page is active and not a simple support or a neutral background. In this mode the text of ‘Amereida’ was written without punctuation, which is supplied efficiently by the white that the author leaves between the words.

2- THE DIAGRAMS (PLANS)

The second point to note in the spatially constructed poem ‘Amereida’ is the presence not only of the constituent words, but some diagrams and maps that are not the typical illustration of the poem in deluxe editions, where the text is accompanied by heavyweight engravings that do not belong to the poem as such. In the case of Amereida we are dealing with another situation: within this active white that sustains the words appear diagrams that are located on pages in the same way as the verses, that is to say, they are a constituent part of the poem. They are the architectonic construction in the poem. These diagrams have the language of spatiality. At this point we will not analyse them as a totality, but we will refer to the first. We will deal with what is presented and constructed. It presents a map of South America: if not a current one, it is one that has been constructed for the occasion. It is not an expressive construction or an allegory of the South American continent, but it is a cartographic projection. What we see is the verifiable outline of the continent that has been exposed in a spatial construction: the land appears as white, empty, this projection has drawn the contour lines of the marine depths and transforms the white of the page into the continent. At this point we can read the radical dimensions of this map of America; the first is that the continent in question is the concrete (real) continent inhabited by South Americans, with its precise morphology as recorded by cartography. And the second dimension is that this concrete continent is transformed into the poetic white of the page. In other words with map the continent comes into the poetic whiteness of the page that sustains verse, hence it does not suggest an America that resides in the mind and heart of the poet, but conveys the continent that all its inhabitants are concerned with.

3- LA PHALÈNE , THE MOTH

Together with the collective work of the poem ‘Amereida’ comes the creation of the Phalène. The poet Godofredo Iommi himself publishes a text in the poetry journal Ailleurs in Paris in 1963 that is entitled Letter of the Wanderer. In it he asserts – from the western poetic tradition via its latest link with the avant-garde, Surrealism – the response to one of two questions that had not been answered for this constituent artistic movement of modernity. It is the debate over poetry and reality. It is this text that supports what has already been begun in Valparaiso and the cities of Europe. It affirms that the poet is the bearer the narrator of the fiesta of the human condition who reveals the splendor that men have inside them. What it calls the consoling fiesta is what reveals the possibility of making and achieving all reality in all its meanings. The revelation of that moment which is man before all time. There, in the formulation of this text and the realized ‘acts’, originates the new poetic genre, the Phalène, where there is poetry made by all, as had been asserted by the Conte de Lautréamont (Isidore Lucien Ducasse). The poetic act comes into being after an assembly where the poet proposes the unfolding of a game that has as a fruit the emergence of words spoken by the participants, be they guests or those who are there by chance and have agreed to participate. The game is based on the silence that the rules of play, agreed at that moment by the participants. With the words that originate from the act the poet forms a poem, adding only connecting words between the spoken ones. The act terminates with a reading of the poem which is left as a gift in the place. This new poetic genre, that has numerous antecedents as Godofredo Iommi himself points out in the Letter of the Wonderer, makes an opening in the opposite direction to that presented by the drawings of Amereida. It is the poetry that comes to life and its events through the poetic act, ranking among the facts of the life of the city and of spatiality. Constituting in the words of the poet a poetry that takes place which proposes that for men place is the site of discovery of an original word.

4- LA TRAVESÍA , VOYAGE, literally CROSSING.

The travesía is an action born of the poetic discourse of ‘Amereida’. The poem ‘Amereida’ argues that this is a continent without myth, meaning by myth the first word that opens towards a destination. The cape of the big island of the world in the double sense of head and cape, has the myth of Europe, which has not been inherited by South America, because according to Amereida ‘ nothing can be fully implemented in South America that comes primarily from the constellations of the stars and sun.» Then the poet suggests how the destination of European myth has been increasingly directed to a horizon beyond, arriving at inventions and making discoveries. For South America the poet proposes the travesía, the verse says literally:

reveal
rip the veil
across
- the voice tells us –
travesia
no discovery or invention
agree
that our own free sea passes through us
releases

in gratitude
or recognition
our own freedom

Here we pause a moment to bring up architecture throughout this poetic, which of course does not confuse the destination of a poet with an architect whose relationship to fecundity is not blurred or confused. The travesia formulation arises in the coincidence of poetry and spatiality. Architecture builds the mental diagram (plan) that carries the continent into the poetic whiteness of the page, and poetry pours into spatiality and life through the poetic act. It is this coincidence which allows the formulation and fact of the travesía that starts as the one name in a verse.

5- WORK IS A GIFT

This was formulated verbally at first, it is the moment of embarking on travesías around the American continent, to different points in it, and where in each a work of architecture is donated. There have been many architectural voyages, of contemplation, study, addressing cultural issues, but none of them include a work. Poetic solicitude is undertaken without real antecedents. The phalène is a real foothold, almost two points of support since it has opened the possibility of approaching a place with no purpose other than donation, and partly through the performed phalènes visual artists realise in-situ constructions that are not called works but ‘signs’.

The architects do not carry out architectural symbols but make works of architecture properly speaking now they are in unusual conditions. The first to be elaborated is the concept of ‘detail’ (Pormenor) which is a fragment of work that is encountered finished, so that in its lightness the work of this travesía achieves an end and not just the beginning of a construction. The travesía as formulated in the beginning is not an immigration, it is a transfer for a short time ranging between ten days and one month, which implies that the work is lightweight. Now the condition the work of travesía has to fulfil is to be a gift. This is probably the condition that distinguishes a travesía from any other architectural activity or construction. This stems from its poetic origin. It has been suggested that South America has no myth, and yet it has been occupied and inhabited for much of its length, but this occupation has been according to a colonial order, that is to say it has become a source of wealth extracted from the earth to be taken away to a distant centre, the metropolis. This mode of occupation has meant that the earth is not constituted as a place of residence, the aim being to emigrate after obtaining the sought-after wealth. (There is the popular term ‘Doings one’s own America’). In the colonial mode of occupying land, the colonists called America the Indies. So the travesía as a work does not seek to dominate, govern, conquer, exploit, or extract any kind of wealth, and does not even seek to civilize the place. What a travesía constructs is a gift, That is why it can reveal american space. It must remain a gift so it does not fall into the absurdity of continuing colonial space.

6- EPHEMERAL ARCHITECTURE

This condition of donation without which the travesía becomes a normative activity in which disclosures of American space and being are not possible, requires some guarantee. Some effective zone must constitute and must be constituted by a guarantee of what is proposed, i.e. to give. In the case of the profession of architecture, we are not facing intentions and relationships, either emotional or institutional. What governs the travesía is the construction of a habitable space emerging from American spatiality.

So the travesía is given, and possible on one architectural condition, that of being ephemeral.

Firstly what is donated declares its ephemeral nature so that those who receive it are able to make it theirs or reject it. Otherwise it becomes an imposition, although of a civilizing character, and would not enter into the space of what is received freely. Thus the ephemeral nature of architecture guarantees in advance for those who live where the travesía ends that what is built is a donation.

For those joining the travesía an ephemeral work opens a door for them that multiplies the possibilities of building, the first is that it does not represent a difficulty for those in power, at whatever level, as a government, to do with land ownership, legislation or whatever, as the ephemeral does not involve a contract or have the ability to promise, that is to say it does not oblige.

Then we have to explain what it is to realize a work of architecture that has its ephemeral character guaranteed. We say that it is primarily a dimension of time. It is a travesía via movement over a territory that is not an emigration, this is in addition to having a time that has the character of a contemporary journey, i.e. between two and four weeks, so it is not a residence. The travesía undertaking erects a personal work that is a direct execution. The work is not realized through the intervention of third parties with appropriate budget for personal fulfillment, i.e. it is done without construction companies. What a man is able to build in a week of work can be demolished within hours. In this way the amount of work accomplished since its inception ensures its demise. Its purpose is not disappearance but donation, therefore the possibility has been considered that a town hosts its own work and wants to support and maintain it.

The ephemeral work constitutes a gift in ensuring its own demise, but also in allowing its support if the exercise of freedom of those who receive it enables this.

This reality drawn by the travesía brings to mind a primary dimension of architecture. With its works the art of architecture is the construction of what is fixed about the human condition. Risking an affirmation we can say that what gives the fixed, opposing the mobile and mutable, is architecture. Then what illuminates the travesía is the inherent trend in the building of the world that links the fixed in architecture with what endures. A situation which in itself is not the only possibility. It is now an option to assert that the fixed will not alone endure. The Open City of Amereida is oriented to this possibility, in the words of the poet, the milestone of America. As much as the fixed of architecture is grounded in it (not only) through fidelity to names, but in the dispute of the ephemeral and the enduring.
